Henning Inc. stood up emergency shelter operations at the Henry House and Merrill Field to help prevent Alaskans freezing to death
Anchorage, AK – In a rapid response to the urgent need for emergency shelter, Henning Inc. has successfully initiated operations at the Henry House and Merrill Field, establishing non-congregate shelters to protect Alaskans from the harsh winter elements. This initiative aims to prevent potentially life-threatening situations for those experiencing homelessness.
Just last night, Henning Inc. mobilized its dedicated team to open these emergency cold weather shelters within hours of finalizing their contract with the municipality, offering a warm refuge to 200 individuals in need. This swift action underscores the organization’s commitment to addressing homelessness in Anchorage during the coldest months of the year.
Henning Inc. remains committed to expanding its services and support for the homeless community, ensuring that as temperatures drop, individuals have access to safe, warm places to sleep. The organization continues to work collaboratively with local agencies and stakeholders to strengthen the city’s homeless response system, striving to create lasting solutions for those in need.
“I’m incredibly proud of my staff and team,” said Executive Director Shawn Hays. “Their hard work and dedication reflect our years of experience in shelter operations, which will be invaluable this winter. We are excited to continue our mission of addressing the shortcomings in our homeless response system. By walking alongside those experiencing homelessness, we aim to guide them toward recovery and stability.”
Operations Director Crystal Abbott emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “Last night, my team opened the Henry House and rooms at Merrill Field within just four hours of signing the contract with the city. Accomplishing this is no small feat, but we recognize the critical importance of having emergency shelters operational, especially when snow blankets the ground. Every minute counts when lives are at stake.”
“This winter, our focus will be not only on providing immediate shelter but also on implementing strategies that promote long-term solutions,” explained Strategy Director Alexis Johnson. “We’re committed to collaborating with community partners to ensure that those we serve have access to the resources and support they need to build a stable future. It’s about creating a sustainable system that lifts individuals out of homelessness for good.”
